Britain's banks were bailed out with BILLIONS of YOUR money. But now they are back to paying themselves huge bonuses, and charging you £25 if you overdraw by 1p. Only the Liberal Democrats have called for all of these: 1. A special tax on the profits of all banks, so they start to pay us back 2. A change in the law to stop rip-off bank charges 3. Splitting 'casino' banking from regular lending to hard-working people and small businesses. Do you agree with these proposals? Vote now! Does Hackney need an elected Mayor? |

The London Borough of Hackney has 60 elected councillors, and has to have these by law. They each get paid at least £12,000 per year, plus expenses. Some councils, such as Hackney, also have a directly elected mayor. Jules Pipe, Hackney’s Labour Mayor, just increased his salary to over £80,000 per year, plus expenses. We also have a council chief executive in Hackney, who earns even more. The main arguments in favour of a Mayor is that he or she can take decisions faster and is directly accountable. But the main argument against is that all the councillors (which we have to keep) end up with very little to do. Many councils in London are performing much better than Hackney, and they don’t have an elected mayor. The Hackney local elections are coming up in May. Whoever wins will in place for four years. Does Hackney need an elected mayor?
